Avis India, a global car service provider, has witnessed a growth of 4% in female clients for self-drive, up from 2% last year to 6% in 2018. Cashing on this trend, Avis India is giving special incentives to female travellers to take up self-drive holidays, said Sunil Gupta, MD & CEO, Avis India. Launched around two years ago, Avis India’s self-drive business now contributes to over 50% of the overall leisure business. To further cater to the growing demand for self-drive, the company is planning to double its fleet-size by next year.
Gupta elaborated, “Self-driving has now come of age in India, and is most popular among the millennials in the metros. The reason for this is quite straightforward: the additional flexibility and convenience that self-driven rental cars offer is unmatched by any other travel option. The sector has witnessed remarkable growth in the last five years, and is expected to continue on its trajectory in the coming years.”
Predicting the business to grow three-fold in the current fiscal as compared to last year, Gupta emphasised that the company in the next four years, would be consolidating its position in the existing cities and later explore other potential cities.
Talking about expansion, Gupta said that self-drive section of Avis India has spread its reach to 10 cities in less than two years. Moreover, the fleet size in all cities has been ramped up, and the company has introduced new variants in four categories, i.e. Hatchback, Sedan, Multi Utility Vehicles (MUVs) and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs).
Gupta stated that Avis India’s retail portfolio has expanded comprehensively in the past one year and has emerged as the fastest growing business vertical for the company. “We are the only car hire company which offers self-drive and chauffeur drive service in India and abroad. With our recent ‘Now in India’ advertising campaign we have been able effectively reach out to the leisure travel community about our presence in India and footprints abroad.”
Gupta informed that he is witnessing a growing interest from the India-bound international travellers opting for self- and chauffeur-driven services. International business contributes about 25% to the overall leisure business of the company, while the domestic vertical continues to steadily grow at a rate of 20% month-on-month with majority of the business coming from the metro cities.
“With Avis India, a lot of international travellers reserve their ground transportation requirements as we are the only recognised international car hire company in India,” Gupta expressed. To facilitate these car-rentals, Avis India has self-drive service available in seven international airports in India namely Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Kochi, while the chauffeur drive services are presently available in 19 cities of India. Gupta informed that most of the business travellers in India prefer chauffeur drives, whereas the leisure tourist prefer self-drive.
Elaborating on the new services, Gupta said that the company has introduced car delivery and collection for every self-drive booking along with paperless check-in and check-out. It has also provided a single platform to book both domestic and international self-drive car rentals. Through the Avis India mobile application, the company also offers rental solutions to corporate and leisure customers in and out of India.
